Formaldehyde Free! FAQ's

What is the preservative used in SunPure Straight?

Vanillin.

What is Vanillin?

Vanillin is produced from the vanilla bean which is a natural plant that grows mainly on the island of Madagascar. It is the second most expensive spice in the world! - Saffron is the first. Vanillin is an FDA approved food preservative.

What is an Aldehyde?

We have been asked many times if our product, SunPure Straight, contains aldehyde. To clear up this confusion, we want to emphasize that Aldehyde is not a compound by itself. It is the name of a class of compounds known as the Aldehyde Group. This group identifies organic compounds which contain a terminal carbonyl group (i.e. chemical formula O==CH-). That is all! No product can contain aldehyde.

Is Vanillin an Aldehyde?

Yes. Its chemical name is 3-methoxy-4-hydrobenzaldehyde.

What is Imidazolidinyl Urea?

Imidazolidinyl Urea is an antimicrobial preservative used in cosmetics and other personal care products and is present SunPure Straight in this capacity alone. It can also be used as a preservative system and is, in fact, one of the most widely used preservative systems in the world. When a product containing water is changed from a liquid to a gas, imidazolidinyl urea releases formaldehyde only if formaldehyde is present in the product. Since there is no formaldehyde in the SunPure Straight formula, there can be no release of it!

What is Formaldehyde?

Formaldehyde is a chemical compound whose formula is H2CO. As you can see, its terminal is carbonyl, therefore it falls into the aldehyde group. It is the simplest aldehyde and as such is very inexpensive. Aqueous solutions of formaldehyde are referred to as formalin, more commonly known as formal. The first syllable 'form' gives its name to the specific aldehyde - thus, in this case, formaldehyde.
